The name finally came to me this week. . .

Many people name their stomas and at first I was turned off by the thought of naming it but now that I have come to embrace this gift I have been given I pondered about a name. Not wanting to name it something too crude (I want my stoma to be nice to me) I searched high and low, calling it different names and deciding that didn't quite fit right before I landed on. . .Kalliope. The moment I said Kalliope my stoma made a little noise and ironically Kalliope means beautiful voice. The added bonus is I have a nickname for it too, Kal my little pal! So from now on we will have the adventures of Colleen and Kalliope! Stay tuned for more!

So what do I do now?

When I read his response back to me tears welled up in my eyes. He is right and I just needed to read the words. I didn't do this, my body changed because of a really bad disease, I didn't do anything wrong, I didn't cause this but only I can have faith in me and I have to make that choice to have faith. I never imagined I would wake up on St. Patricks Day in my 28th year of life and no longer have a colon. The thing is though is that we don't foresee circumstances like disease or loss because if we did we would find a way around them or be able to prepare ourselves more. I used to have this delusional thought that when I was older and had a partner and children that my colon would stop working then and not now. I look back at my thought process and think it is silly because who am I to control when my colon decides to stop working. So here we go on a new journey in life, one that lacks a colon that didn't work well in the first place. I am a survivor and my ostomy and I are going to keep on going. Maybe I will become an activist for one more thing in life, maybe that was my destiny. Right now it is too early to tell where I am headed but I know it will be good!

My view on pornography

"No man or woman was put on this earth to be hurt or humiliated in order to facilitate another persons' masturbation" -Gail Dines-

Over the years I have found myself discussing the issue of pornography with others. I personally do not approve or like pornography due to the damage it has the ability to cause. My stance is one that not many would agree with. Therefore I find myself diving further into the issue and looking at why I don't approve of it. I would never tell another person not to view pornography because I do believe in the rights of others to choose what they do in their free time. That being said the following explains why I take the stance I do.
1.) With the advance of technology pornography has become increasingly available to the public and there is a competitive edge on who can show the most disturbing, violent, raunchy picture. Pop culture shows that is is good to be a cool, liberated woman who not only tolerates pornography but is willing to join in. Women are encouraged to show more skin and be more sexy but when is showing more skin enough? At one point in history women wearing pants was considered progressive and now we walk around with mini-skirts and little tank tops on.
2.) Pornography is simply the documentation of prostitution via internet, DVD, video game, or VHS. It literally is only the technology fueled form of prostitution but one person removed. The person who makes and produces the film is just considered the pimp in this case. The producer holds the power over who gets paid what amount and what type of sexual scene should be acted out. Those who participate are simply directed what to do and have no control of the situation.
3.) Many men and women are coerced into the sex industry or given a set of circumstances within the confines of their life that turn them to pornography to survive. This is not to say that everyone is coerced, I know that some people make the choice to be in the pornography industry but their choices to engage and partake in such an industry are many times made under far less than ideal conditions and this results in significant health issues in their lives. Drugs can be rampant within the industry thus making people turn to making films in order to obtain the money they need to keep their habit.
4.) Pornography allows racism, sexism, misogyny, and violence to continue throughout our society. Pornography is mostly produced by white heterosexual males that have no consideration for the fact that they are keeping others in a class subordinate to them.

Stay tuned for more. . .
